The Department of Profiling and Expression, a part of the Translational Medicine organization at Merck Research Laboratories,  is seeking an experienced  pathologist to support applied research and biomarker development for evaluations of candidate biological pharmaceuticals, predominantly in support of immuno-oncology.

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Perform tissue evaluations, both human tumor assessments and murine studies, to support discovery research efforts in molecular characterization of clinical tumor specimens, model development, in vivo efficacy evaluations, mechanism of action studies, and tissue biodistribution studies
  • Oversee and guide novel intact-tissue based assay development, validation, and execution
  • Provide support to ongoing efforts with methods development for highly multiplexed immunofluorescence assays and digital image analysis, in collaboration with in-house image analysis specialist.
  • Contribute to discovery project teams and biomarker teams as a subject matter expert
  • Lead a small team (2-3 bench scientists) within the anatomic pathology group
  • Interact well and smoothly with other pathologists, IHC bench scientists, histotechnicians, within the anatomic pathology group
  • Interface with cross-functional internal partners and collaborators (Boston, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Singapore) to ensure maximal efficiency and communication in project development and execution.
  • This position will require a high level of comfort with complex multitasking; strong self-motivation; the ability to work independently; excellent communication skills including written communication; excellent interpersonal skills; and a highly collaborative approach

The Palo Alto anatomic pathology group is the central source of novel IHC and multiplexed IF assay development and early research application for discovery and predictive biomarker generation in translational oncology and biologics at Merck. The work we do is in great demand and this demand continues to grow. Pathologist support for these efforts is essential and we are looking for an experienced research pathologist, comfortable with leading a small team, comfortable with assay development including multiplexed immunofluorescence, familiar with the industry setting, and preferably oriented to modern tumor immunology, to join our dynamic high functioning team in helping to drive forward this exciting mission.



Qualifications

Education Requirement:

  • MD
  • DVM
  • PhD (Preferred)

Required Experience: 

  • Minimum of 7 years experience as a working pathologist
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in industry
  • Extensive experience and high comfort level with tissue based assay development
  • Minimum of 3 years supervisory experience with an interest in mentoring junior staff

Preferred Experience:

  • Background in tumor immunology
  • Previous experience with biologics
