As an Associate Director, Computer Science Data Analysis Architect at Merck’s Austin IT HUB, you will be part of inventing tomorrow. Our Innovative centers are where great people come together and deliver solutions that save and improve lives.


The Applied Data Science group is developing new approaches to systems and architectures to explore new opportunities to meet important business needs. From scalable data services and data analysis to graph processing and visualization, the need and opportunity to turn ideas into reliable, adaptable software solutions are significant and growing.

We are seeking an experienced computer scientist with advanced software production experience in web data design, feature optimization, image processing, machine learning, and data structures to design, implement, and deliver high quality software and capabilities to meet existing and emerging business needs. This position provides an opportunity to extend operational rigor and feature development to current and future systems from experiments and prototypes to pilots and sustainable services. The opportunity includes both shaping and refining development of sophisticated distributed software services and streamlined performance tuning to ensure reliable and efficient processing.

The position requires extensive experience in multiple forms of data processing, software services, secure design, and visualization. The ability to both operate and assess existing code, develop, test, and continuously improve complex capabilities, and deliver precision information through automated web data analysis are essential to this work. The work involves hands on and technical leadership across a spectrum of specialized computer science skills and experience in cloud computing, graph analysis, data visualization, and product outreach. Of note, this work requires demonstrated experience in commercial cloud services, big data processing, multi-lingual feature extraction, database design and performance tuning, and rigorous software development and operations processes. Proven technical experience is each of these areas are necessary to ensure progress and advances continue and accelerate in this important business area.

This technical expert will work with other team members to ensure key applications are implemented and tested to reflect the best of breed in design, implementation, operations, and security of IT software and data solutions. The ability to sustain reliable operations, add new features, and refactor when necessary while ensuring delivery adapts to changing business needs and opportunities is essential. The individual must have an enthusiasm to discover and address unexpected opportunities and challenges as they arise. The ability to explore, prioritize, and simplify ambiguous and changing requirements with a focus on time-to-market within a small, focused team will be a key measure of success for this role.

This position will report to the Applied Data Science Director in IT Planning and Innovation/Applied Technology.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to;

  • Provide technical leadership in the analysis, assessment, debug, development, testing, and management of complex, state-of-the-art software using modern development tools, methodologies, and services.
  • Discover and adapt new approaches to simplify and extend the existing architecture, application features, and data processing pipelines, while evolving the services to meet future needs.
  • Challenge assumptions to find new ways to combine and align features, functions, and user needs into effective capabilities that meet and exceed user expectations at low cost.
  • Identify urgent priorities and deliver interim solutions while simultaneously streamlining implementation of re-designed and configurable software and operations components.
  • Understand and implement rigorous secure design, testing, and compliance throughout the development process.
  • Seek out new ways to capture and communicate needs, assumptions, and opportunities for applications development, deployment, and sustainment.


Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.


  • A minimum of 8 years experience in hands-on software development of applications, services, and production software delivery.
  • A minimum of 4 years technical leadership in reliability, usability, and security of software services and applications that reduces complexity and speeds time to market.
  • Data analysis to include feature extraction, data fusion, and data structure design and implementation.
  • Real world experience configuring, tuning, and operating commercial cloud services.
  • Familiarity with big data and graph network analysis using modern development tools and methodologies.
