As an Associate Director at Merck’s Austin IT HUB, you will be part of inventing tomorrow.  Our Innovative centers are where great people come together and deliver solutions that save and improve lives. 

 

The Applied Data Science group is developing new approaches to systems and architectures to solve specialized business problems. From scalable data services and data analysis to graph processing and visualization, the need and opportunity to turn ideas into reliable, adaptable production software solutions are significant and growing.

 

We are seeking a computer scientist leader with enterprise-scale software production experience to explore new approaches to continuous development and streamlined operations. This position provides an opportunity to Merck best practices and adapt and apply modern software development and design methodologies to important new capabilities. The opportunity includes leadership of multiple operational services, hands-on development, measures and metrics of production services, and interactive design with users, stakeholders, and enterprise partners for monitoring and performance tuning. 
 

This position brings together multiple forms of data processing, software services, secure design, and visualization. Building the work of other team members, the individual selected for this position will manage the productization, automated testing, and continuous improvement of capabilities that are providing important services to multiple business areas. Strong computer science skills and experience in distributed and cloud computing, image processing, graph analysis, data visualization, and product outreach are all important elements.  

 

Technical leadership is a key role in developing and transitioning proven pilots and prototypes into reliable and low maintenance production services while simultaneously supporting experimentation, feedback, and new opportunities. The ability to clarify, prioritize, and simplify ambiguous and changing requirements with a focus on time-to-market using a small, focused team will be a key measure of success for this role. 
 

This position will report to the Director of Applied Data Science in Applied Technology

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to;

  • Create and improve continuous development processes that balance functional improvements with availability and reliability through autonomous monitoring and recovery for multiple products and services.
  • Develop and provide technical leadership of specialized, state-of-the-art software systems using modern development tools, methodologies, and services.
  • Lead parallel efforts across multiple capabilities to combine and align features, functions, and developer needs into effective services that meet and exceed operational expectations at low cost.
  • Address urgent priorities with interim solutions while simultaneously streamlining implementation of re-usable and configurable software and operations components.
  • Understand and implement rigorous design, testing, and compliance throughout the development process through automation and continuous testing.
  • Capture and communicate all interest, requirements, assumptions, and opportunities for applications development, deployment, and sustainment.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Science.

Required:

  • Minimum of 10 years experience in hands-on software development with enterprise scale applications and production software delivery experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in exploring new technical options and structural approaches to understand and contribute to continuous development of novel applications and services.
  • Technical leadership in computer science and systems reliability, scale, durability, usability, and re-use of software services and tools that reduces complexity and speeds time to market.
  • A deep interest and understanding of methods for improving operational services through automated monitoring, continuous regression testing, and inline performance and usability testing.
  • Strong business acumen and easy rapport with partners, customers, stakeholders and others interested and involved with the prioritization, specification, and adaption of solutions and applications.
  • Proven ability to communicate with business stakeholders.
  • Adept at managing diverse relationships across expertise, geography and culture.

Preferred:

  • Hands on technical experience with enterprise projects and/or complex software efforts.
  • Familiarity with modern development methodologies, tools, and frameworks with a willingness and ability to change to new tools when appropriate.
  • Experience with advanced data science algorithms, geographically distributed parallel processing, data security and analysis, digital health applications, large scale graph data structures, integrated development and operations, and continuous system improvement and streamlined operations.
  • Willingness to explore new approaches to health and status, operational monitoring, business dashboards, and user feedback are also central elements of this work.
  • Commitment to streamlined development models that automate support activities through scripts, tools, and monitoring.
