The Associate Director, North America Fleet is a member of the Merck Fleet COE team, and is responsible for managing the sourcing and operations of Merck’s fleet in the US, Canada, Puerto Rico and Jamaica.

  • Create/update/enforce fleet policy and procedures to manage vehicle selection, fleet operation, driver accountability and internal governance. 
  • Develop a sustainable operating model to manage vehicle ordering/delivery, driver support, fuel consumption, safety/accident management, vehicle disposal, and other aspects of fleet operation. 
  • In collaboration with Global Safety, support Merck’s fleet safety program through data collection/reporting, communication, and change management. 
  • In collaboration with Finance, prepare fleet budget, track expense performance, evaluate funding mechanism, and perform lease vs buy analysis. 
  • Use the Sourcing Management Process (SMP) to select suppliers for fleet vehicles and fleet management services. Manage supplier performance through metrics/scorecard. 
  • Use the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) model to analyze and determine what vehicles to purchase/lease, and how they are to be equipped. 
  • Lead Fleet Council to conduct business reviews and facilitate fleet decision making. 
  • Provide regular management reporting on key priority metrics. 
  • Use industry best practice and customer feedback to continuously identify/execute projects to improve Merck’s fleet operation.


  • Critical thinking - the ability to ask the right questions, separate facts from assumptions, and determine what is relevant and what is not in the decision-making process. 
  • Project management - use facts and data to develop projects and obtain sponsorship. Lead project execution from kickoff to completion. Implement controls to sustain desired improvements. 
  • Change Management - adopt effective change execution methodology to manage change initiatives. Engage sponsors, stakeholders, and people affected by the change to plan, execute and sustain the initiative. Ensure success through assessing potential risks and incorporating risk mitigation in the change execution. 
  • Stakeholder management - comfortable interacting at multiple levels, from drivers on up to the Managing Director. 
  • Communications - optimize message delivery (such as verbal, writing, bulletin board) based on the audience. Develop effective communication plan to deliver and re-enforce the message. 
  • Collaboration – be able to work with multiple departments and stakeholders by removing organizational, functional and/or geographic barriers to foster effective collaboration. These may include Sales, Finance, Latin America Procurement, HR, Environment and Safety. 
  • Negotiating – develop knowledge of internal business requirements and the market conditions to set up successful negotiation with suppliers over contract price and terms. 
  • People management - Ability to supervise and oversee the work of others, including direct reports, and/or dedicated resources from fleet suppliers.  

Education Minimum Requirement:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering or a related field.

Required Experience and Skills: 

  • An understanding of financial principles, as it pertains to the acquisition (purchase or lease) of vehicles, and their accounting on the company’s balance sheet. 
  • Know the supplier market to assess outsourcing options. This would include fleet leasing, fleet programs such as maintenance and accident management and fuel cards, and other administrative programs. Understand what to outsource and what to keep in house, and know who offers such programs and how they are priced. 
  • Be familiar with the used-vehicle market, including wholesale, auction, and employee markets. Know how vehicles are sold via each method, how they are priced, and tie that in to how vehicles are equipped when new. 
  • Have a basic understanding of vehicle systems and technology. 
  • Experience in managing fleet policies and procedures, from vehicle assignment to replacement cycling, from personal use to accident reporting. 
  • Experience in managing sourcing events, conducting negotiations, and managing supplier performance. 
  • Managed fleets of 1000 vehicles 
  • 5 years in fleet operation and sourcing management

Preferred Experience and Skills: 

  • Process improvement skills, including Six Sigma certification 
  • Membership and/or certification from NAFA, AFLA
