College of Pharmacy Announces Search for Chair of

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences


College of Pharmacy, Howard University invites applications for the position of Chair of Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This position will also hold a faculty rank as a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.


The department Chair is responsible for providing leadership, direction, creating/expanding research collaborations within Howard University and beyond. He/she will also provide oversight for the department-wide matters related to academic affairs, the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) programs, accreditation, faculty development, teaching excellence, research productivity, and service. The successful candidate will have established a rigorous, extramurally-funded research program. He/she will report directly to the Dean of the College of Pharmacy and will actively participate as a member of the Executive Committee. In collaboration with other administrators, he/she will provide consultation to the Dean on administrative matters and as a member of executive committee, deliberate on instructional and scholarly activities and in service matters of the College. In addition, he/she will provide classroom instruction in the curriculum, conduct scholarly research activities, as well as provide service to the College/University as expected of a faculty member per Howard University’s Faculty Handbook and Employees Handbook.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Leading the departmental research enterprise and mentoring research productivity of the department
  • Creating/expanding research collaborations within Howard University and beyond
  • Providing input on policy, process revisions, College strategic plan and direct implementations
  • Leading the development and implementation of the strategic plan for the Department and be actively involved in maintaining full accreditation of the college.
  • Implementing best teaching practices appropriate to the academic model
  • Facilitating quality faculty recruitment, development, mentoring, retention, and performance monitoring for the department
  • Supervising/evaluating the activities, productivity and performance of the department faculty and support departmental staff.
  • Planning and ensuring continued growth and development of the Department and its faculty
  • Monitor faculty workload metrics in accordance with predetermined benchmarks
  • Serving as a custodian of equipment and facilities of the department in accordance with University safety guidelines
  • Preparing the department’s Annual Report and workload metrics
  • Assuming an advocacy role for his/her department at the Executive Committee meetings and in other College/University forums, as appropriate
  • Developing, reviewing, and evaluating Departmental courses and programs
  • Recommending the appointment and evaluation of the support personnel
  • Providing student advisement
  • Making teaching assignments
  • Recommending and implementation of Departmental budget
  • Planning the research and outreach activities of the department
  • Implementing the College’s strategic plan as it pertains to the department
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean


Qualifications include an earned terminal degree, Pharm. D. or Ph. D. degrees preferred, with postdoctoral training or equivalent experiences, and evidence of success in innovative, extramurally-funded research programs. The candidate must have demonstrated work experience, a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service commensurate with the rank of Professor. Experience in ACPE accredited institutions is preferred. The candidate is expected to be eligible for tenure preferably or on tenure-track. Other qualifications include a track record of:

The candidate must also be able to demonstrate strong interest in inter-professional research collaboration, ability to effectively execute programs in advancement of the vision and mission of the College and accomplish the objectives of the programs in the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
