Key Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Develops and executes strategic and business initiatives across all relevant sourcing categories (direct and indirect), in support of operation’s priorities aligned to Animal Health – Global Supplier Management (AH-GSM) strategy & objectives. Scope is Animal Health Large Molecule Operations sites in North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific; all Large Molecule external manufacturing suppliers / CMOs; all direct, indirect, & capital suppliers; and spend of ~$500MM.
  • Setting strategic and operating objectives for AH-GSM function across all AH Large Molecule Operations Sites and External Manufacturers to ensure facilities maximize the capabilities to execute procurement strategies and solutions, and to ensure that supply lines are established to support budget and growth plans.
  • Serves as a member of the Animal Health – Global Supplier Management Leadership Team and provides leadership for AH-GSM initiatives and activities in support of organization operations and performance enhancements.
  • Serves as AH-GSM Sourcing & Procurement business partner for the Animal Health Large Molecule Operations leadership team.
  • Manages the Operational Performance and priorities of the AH-GSM Large Molecule Team, including Supplier Value Management, Risk Management, supplier performance, Economic Inclusion & Supplier Diversity.
  • Responsible for executing operating objectives for the AH-GSM function, with key activities including, but not limited to: product sourcing, supply risk management, supplier performance improvement, cost reduction, supplier diversity development, working capital improvement, supplier relationship management, dispute resolution (w/ appropriate escalation), production planning, materials management (SAP entries, E2E planning, logistics), Quality issues (deviation management, product release), Technology issues (technology transfers, Investigations, Process Improvements, etc.), oversight of shop floor production (e.g., determining when an Quality or Technology representative should be deployed to the External facility), MPS and Continuous Improvement activities.
  • Implement strategic direction for procurement and external manufacturing efforts and execute tactical procurement and operations processes; work with MMD and operations leadership in the establishment, communication and implementation of business goals and to achieve business targets. Serve as a resource regarding processes, procedures and systems for AH-GSM function. Partner with leaders in the functional areas (e.g., Quality, Technology, Finance, Legal, HR, etc.) to address broader business issues, customer needs and opportunities.
  • Plan, coordinate and administer the operational, financial, administrative, and technical operations of the procurement and external manufacturing processes. Serve as a resource regarding processes, procedures and systems for AH-GSM function.
  • Support/lead selection of suppliers to ensure appropriate quality, service and productivity / savings levels. Ensure that all legal contract requirements are met. Manage relationships with external contacts to ensure optimal team performance and to take appropriate actions by implementing contract negotiation, communication with suppliers and/or or modifying procedure to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Serve as an operational and technical resource for all procurement in the communication and resolution of purchasing systems issues; negotiate successful resolution to problems or concerns; educate customers about process and technology of procurement function. Work with colleagues to ensure compliance to global standards.
  • Manage AH-GSM resources to ensure that facilities maximize the capability to execute procurement & sourcing solutions and to ensure that supply lines are established to support budget and growth plans. Enforce compliance with all AH-GSM policies and procedures by using a data driven business case approach.
  • Provide support for the Supplier Diversity & Development Program and engage in goal establishment, action planning and financial/quantitative reporting, as required.
    Primary activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Leadership - As a key operational and functional leader, accountable for development and implementation of robust sourcing strategies that link to core business deliverables while leveraging the marketplace and supplier community. Significant coordination and collaboration with colleagues and functional partners in managing complexities of external manufacturing network. Delivers exemplary results in the right way.
  • Procurement Leadership - Provide the leadership, strategy and policy for the function building a high performance engagement model with the business and regions.
  • Organizational Development - Build a core team of high quality procurement professionals who have direct accountability for spend management, category management, and execution. Partners with stakeholders outside of GP to ensure alignment.
  • Category scope - Direct responsibility for supplier relationships around the world for locally-managed materials, and is worldwide point of contact for global relationships with numerous key suppliers, which are complex and difficult to manage.
  • Sourcing Management - Utilize/drive sourcing management as a structured process including obtaining sponsorship and creating/leading cross-functional teams. Ensure appropriate sourcing rigor. Compliance to category strategy development, Supplier Performance Management process, and other supply management processes are keys. Navigate challenging contract terms and negotiations in response to business shifts and economic/regulatory volatility.
  • Strategy Development/Implementation - Create breakthrough strategies which deliver quick wins and generate legitimate business value. Drive innovation.
  • Change Management - Adopt high quality change practices with customers and stakeholders, building and implementing an organization which is sustainable. Be a leader by example and practice, embodying the Merck Leadership Standards.
  • Continuous Improvement - Ensure that every supplier relationship is established with intent of future continuous improvement, and to lead and manage the measurement and review process to ensure delivery of expectations.
  • Stakeholder Management - Work in a way that positively engages the support of business colleagues using problem solving, transparency, and proactive communication skills. Build sourcing management pipeline, ensuring stakeholder alignment and compliance to supply management processes.
  • Diversity - Actively support diversity, both within Merck as well as expanding relationships and spend with Diverse Suppliers.
  • Business requirements/cost management focus - Must have keen insight and understanding of business requirements on a 1/3/5 year horizon, and partners with business peers to drive cost reductions. Implement Supplier Value Management with the key suppliers in this category to foster innovation, manage supplier performance, establish appropriate governance model, and ensure continuous improvement.
  • Business Acumen – Ability to work beyond functional supplier management boundaries.

Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor degree in a Business, Engineering, Science or Procurement, or Manufacturing-related degree
  • 3 to 5 years of experience working with senior/executive Leaders
  • Experience in large-scale organizational change initiatives
  • Experience in large-scale organizational communication management and report coordination
  • Experience in strategy development, strategic planning, strategy implementation
  • 5 to 10 years’ experience in Sourcing, Procurement, Supplier Management or related operations supporting a manufacturing environment, preferably in animal health, pharmaceutical or consumer goods industries.
  • Policy, process & procedure leadership experience


  • Previous experience and understanding of animal health &/or biopharmaceutical industry and associated best practices in manufacturing, supply chain management, and supplier/category management.
  • Knowledge of supply chain technologies, performance management & reporting and operations management best practices.
  • Advanced capabilities in Sourcing & Supplier Strategies, Sourcing Methodology, Cost Optimization, Supplier Relationship Management, Negotiation Skills, Financial/Legal Aspects with Procurement, Supplier Diversity, and Supplier Risk Management
  • Category sourcing expertise in both indirect & direct materials and supplier diversity management
  • Sigma Green, Executive Belt – preferred; Black Belt – highly preferred
