The Executive Director, US Cattle Sales & Marketing will report to the AVP of the US Food Animal (FA) Business and is a key member of the US Food Animal Leadership Team. With a strategic focus on the customer and other key stakeholders, the incumbent will lead and direct all sales and marketing activities in support of Merck’s US Animal Health - Cattle Business while executing marketing & sales strategies. Paramount to this role is an individual who excels at coaching, mentoring and developing team members to achieve highest performance and building talent to their highest potential.

Key skills and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop, implement and execute short, medium and long-term product sales & marketing strategies (profitability, customer base, brand equity, market share, etc.) to achieve established goals.
  • Work with FA Leadership and Finance to establish operating plan and budget. Allocate and direct utilization of resources to ensure funds are invested appropriately to meet company goals.
  • Lead, manage, and develop direct and indirect team members to increase talent, sales expertise, and drive performance; participate in the recruitment and selection of industry-leading talent to build a high-performing team; proactively shape culture to develop highly aligned, motivated sales & marketing team.
  • Manage product portfolio to maximize long term sales and profit; develop and execute portfolio strategy to build long term brand health.
  • Achieves financial obligations and targets based on annual business plans; works with marketing team to develop and implement all advertising and promotional spend for the US Cattle business.
  • Build, develop and maintain strong business relationship with key opinion leaders, customer leadership and industry influencers to understand and communicate market trends and competitive activities and to develop business opportunities to increase product placement and occupancy.
  • Collaborate with Marketing brand managers to develop successful strategies to enable the Field Sales force to achieve the targeted sales number for the Cattle Business.
  • Collaborate with Merck Manufacturing Division (MMD) leadership to ensure an uninterrupted supply of products are available to the customer, keeping Manufacturing leadership informed of market trends and disease/outbreak activity impacting product demand which could create an excess or lack of inventory.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to successfully partner cross functionally with all business units, Regulatory, Legal, R&D, Manufacturing , Global Marketing and Business Development colleagues.
  • Collaborate with the Sales Operations team to develop and implement technology based tools to increase sales force effectiveness by providing access to critical information related to customer sales trends, incentive program activity and achievement of customer purchasing targets.
  • Oversees budget planning and forecast management activities, oversees development and communication of financial reports internally.

Education Required:
  • Required:  Bachelor's Degree (Animal Science, Agribusiness, Marketing, or Business degrees preferred)
  • Preferred: MBA or Master’s Degree preferred


  • Minimum of 15 years of marketing, sales and/or business operations, including in-depth knowledge of the Animal Health Industry including experience within the food animal business
  • Minimum of 5 years of people management experience
  • Proven track record of managing, leading, coaching, and developing a high-performing teams
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership
  • Strong financial acumen and budget planning skills
  • Strong strategic capability to successfully manage portfolio of products at various lifecycle phases
  • Ability to effectively influence key stakeholders, drive business decisions and marketing strategies
  • Demonstration of excellent Business Acumen, Relationship Management, Negotiation and Account Management skills
  • Expertise in financial and production forecasting, pricing analysis and strategy, new product launches and marketing communications planning and strategy
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency including the MS Suite, Customer Relationship Management and web applications
