Lead the development of proprietary and partnered new products that will complement our current technology or be based upon new delivery technologies. In addition, the incumbent will lead and build a staff to advance the scientific disciplines to develop patient-centric pharmaceutical products with strong exclusivity protection via patents and other mechanisms.
•Work with senior management across functional areas to identify technologies and product opportunities for development.
•Determine the optimal drug delivery technologies that meet the therapeutic needs of a novel pharmaceutical product, and lead the effort to develop these products.
•Design and apply rigorous scientific approaches to develop products based on Quality-by-Design and risk based product development thinking.
•Lead the effort to accelerate the development and launch of proprietary and partnered products.
•Identify and exploit opportunities that result from the development and launch of new and current delivery systems.
•Identify and execute strategies to develop strong product and technology patents.
•Determine staff requirements which may be deployed from existing R&D departments or hired externally.
•Lead and manage internal scientific teams.
•Serve as lead scientific manager for new products.
•Work with management team to identify commercial applications.
•Develop market strategies to maximize company’s scientific assets and business potential.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:Advanced degree, PhD preferred in pharmaceutical sciences, life sciences, basic sciences, or engineering.. A minimum of 15 years of progressively successful research and management experience, beginning at the bench and rising to Director level is required. Demonstrated ability to execute modern drug development processes based on Quality-by-Design thinking and risk-based development approaches is required as is hands-on experience in managing the development of novel drug delivery systems. Experience in the domain of transdermal drug delivery is preferred but not a must. In addition to scientific abilities, must possess proven team building, managerial and leadership skills, have an understanding of business and be able to envision commercial applications of development projects. Must possess creativity, ability to identify opportunities that will grow the business and have openness to new ideas. A track record of managing an R&D division in a well-recognized pharmaceutical company is preferred.
JUDGMENT / DECISION MAKING:Under general direction as to broad assignments with period review of assignments. Duties performed within a framework of departmental or functional protocol requiring a high degree of original thinking.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:Direct, supervise and review the work of departmental staff
ENVIRONMENT:Air-conditioned office environment. Majority of time spent sitting at desk generating or reviewing documentation. Some exposure to chemicals, fumes, and odors on occasional visits to laboratory.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Regularly required to stand for more than two hours at a time, with stooping and bending. Visual acuity and manual dexterity required proofreading high volume of documents and operating computer.
OTHER:May require overnight travel; occasional extra hours required to meet project deadlines. Frequent distractions and interruptions.
