The specialty dosage forms group within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Merck and Co., Inc. is looking for a talented formulation scientist to help us create the next generation of pharmaceutical products at Merck as part of our multidisciplinary team. Our group is responsible for developing novel implants, respiratory, and other complex pharmaceutical products. We are looking for a scientist or engineer with a passion for driving new product ideas that can take advantage of a big company environment with access to cutting edge capabilities and yet still drive ideas with a small company entrepreneurial attitude. The specialty dosage formulation team at Merck brings commercially demonstrated drug-device formulation technologies used in products like Asmanex® Twisthaler® and Nexplanon® Implant together with an industry leading drug pipeline focused on critical disease areas like oncology and infectious disease. We are passionate about translating product ideas to patients with unmet needs to maximize the impact we can have on human health

Candidates with a PhD in chemical engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, material sciences and engineering or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. Experience with polymeric delivery systems, respiratory product development, drug-device combination product development, drug eluting implants, and/or plastics processing (e.g., extrusion) is beneficial. In this laboratory and pilot plant-based position, the candidate will work closely with a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team to advance formulations into preclinical development. Candidates with a demonstrated track record of driving new product concepts within large organizations are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will possess a strong scientific background, creative problem solving skills, the desire to continuously learn, and the tenacity to develop and effectively drive new product ideas that make a real difference in the world

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Support the design and development of novel implants, respiratory, and other complex pharmaceutical formulations through experimental design, planning, execution and data interpretation
  • Present scientific results at meetings and in technical reports/publications, internally and externally



  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related discipline


  • Experience with polymeric delivery systems, respiratory product development, drug-device combination product development, drug eluting implants, and/or plastics processing (e.g., extrusion)
  • Experience conducting independent research and solving scientific problems in a highly collaborative environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Be energetic, enthusiastic and self-motivated, with a strong desire to learn, to teach, and to contribute


  • Strong scientific acumen, with ability to solve problems of medium/high. complexity via independent planning, design, execution and interpretation of experiments
  • Academic experience in non-conventional drug delivery technologies, including nano- and micro-suspensions, depots, implants, and/or respiratory products
  • Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals
