The Sr. Specialist is responsible for managing Merck’s Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) chemical management data systems, providing business and technical support in accordance with global regulations and guidance, and Merck policy and procedures.  

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Serve as the SAP EHS Global Business Process Owner, responsible for the administrative and technical requirements to own, operate and implement EHS scope in SAP, executing all related duties and activities for Supply Chain EHS teams and work groups. 
  • Lead and be the subject matter expert (SME) for EHS on SAP implementation, enhancements and maintenance.
  • Provide site and corporate level support and global leadership for Merck’s data systems, including SOPs, training, regulatory reports & guidance, KPIs and data processes for delivery and management.
  • Work with Supply Chain Management support teams (Manufacturing, Planning, Logistics, etc.) to develop, implement and maintain data systems, including all related activities (system testing, data, etc.).
  • Leverage and expand utilization of data systems to support compliance to chemical management standard and related regulations.
  • Manage assigned projects and activities, ensuring risks are identified and managed, and deliverables and timelines are met.

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering-related discipline
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in or supporting a manufacturing operations and 2 years of experience in enterprise EHS systems 
  • Project and program management experience
  • Broad EHS knowledge with in depth knowledge of chemical management, chemical hazard communication, GHS, product safety, environmental permits and reporting, and dangerous goods transportation/logistics
  • Strong English written and oral communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving ability
  • Strong aptitude in computer systems for example SAP or equivalent
  • Self-directed & demonstrated efficient work methods, problem solving skills & ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. 
  • Ability to act independently and drive projects and other requests in a proactive, forward thinking manner
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate across cultures, organizational levels and disciplines
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office suite, including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Experience leading site EHS programs or department
  • Six Sigma training 
  • Knowledge and experience with information systems supporting supply chain activities (e.g. SAP, including ECC, APO, BI, etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience in analytic tools such as Spotfire, SAP Business Objects, MiniTab or similar
