The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a bold, innovative and entrepreneurial leader to serve as its next dean for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. This is an unprecedented opportunity for a dean to lead to new heights one of the world's most renowned pharmacy schools with a global reputation for the quality of its education, research and practice innovations.
A recognized leader among pharmacy schools internationally, the School's Pharm.D. program is ranked #1 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. In addition, last year, the School received $36 million in extramural research funding, of which approximately $17 million were from the NIH, ranking it #2 in the nation for total research and NIH funding. In 2014, the Eshelman School received a $100 million gift from Fred Eshelman, Pharm.D., the largest gift from an individual in the history of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the largest ever made to a pharmacy school in the United States. The gift established the Eshelman Institute for Innovation, which aims to inspire a culture of innovation where imagination and creative solutions accelerate change in education, research and health care. The School has also developed extensive international programs, including a unique partnership, the PharmAlliance, with Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and with University College London.
The Dean will report to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost and will oversee a School with 124 full-time faculty, 580 Pharm.D. students, 90 Ph.D. students, 19 M.S. students and 168 staff. The next dean will inspire and challenge these important stakeholders to create a bold and ambitious global vision for the School, consistent with the University's priorities and the unique roles that UNC-Chapel Hill assumes within the state university system.
The successful candidate may come from pharmacy or other health science fields within academia or the private sector and will possess a doctoral level or equivalent professional degree, including Ph.D., Pharm.D., M.D., or other professional degree related to the overall mission of the School. Academic candidates should have a reputation for creative scholarship and a demonstrable record of fostering excellence in research, teaching, and service, as well as the ability to think and act strategically and build effective institutional partnerships. Candidates in relevant industry, government or foundation institutions with a strong appreciation for academic values and faculty governance are encouraged to apply.
