The New Product Development group has a Scientist position open located at our corporate headquarters in Telford, PA. The Scientist position is a laboratory-based role in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment. In this role, you will be supporting biomaterial product and process design and development for Secant Group’s drug delivery and cell therapy platforms utilizing various fabrication and manufacturing techniques.
Secant’s drug delivery platform is currently focused on controlled release using biomaterials to create long-acting injectable and implantable dosage forms of varying geometries, complexity, and novelty. Secant’s cell therapy platform is currently focused on developing biomaterials of varying geometries, complexity, and novelty for biopharmaceutical processes.
As an experienced Scientist, you will design and conduct experiments, design and trial equipment and processes, bring knowledge of process scale-up, mentor junior scientists to best practices in industry, and lead analytical efforts for the New Product Development team. You will have the opportunity to work with teams comprised of technical and non-technical colleagues to effectively coordinate internal efforts and customer requests, while progressing multiple projects through to completion quickly. This position provides you with ample opportunities to keep abreast of innovative and novel scientific developments in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries by presenting your own work at meetings, attending conferences, reading relevant literature, and trialing your ideas in the lab.
Design and develop flow-based fabrication processes for biomaterials using emulsion, microfluidics, spray-drying, and membrane techniques.
Design and develop flow-based apparatuses to trial biomaterials using bioreactor, recirculation, and filtration equipment.
Fabricate microspheres, fibers, membranes, rods, and other structures for cell culture, cell therapy, and injectable and implantable drug delivery.
Apply expertise in fluid dynamics, rheology, two-phase systems, flow, droplets, and particle science to product and process development.
Apply knowledge of polymer chemistry and solvents to product and process development.
Understand how different polymerization and catalyst chemistries require different fabrication process designs.
Achieve target product profiles by designing well-characterized manufacturing processes.
Adapt existing lab-scale processes for scaled up manufacture.
Assess feasibility of new biomaterial fabrication processes for scalability, throughput, yield, and ability to meet customer requirements.
Design and build fixtures and systems to support experimentation needs, using good engineering practices.
Use GPC, rheometry, FTIR, particle size analysis, surface potential analysis, microscopy, and other analytical tools to characterize fabricated biomaterials.
Independently select, design, and/or execute experiments, based on interpretation of previous results and understanding of known theory.
Contribute to innovative approaches to achieve project goals.
Collaborate with other teams within and outside of R&D to achieve project goals.
Make effective decisions to achieve desired outcomes of immediate work group.
Anticipate/recognize potential problems with equipment and/or supplies, and initiate action to solve or prevent problems.
Follow all applicable Company test methods, work instructions, S.O.P.’s, and guidelines.
Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned.
Daily exposure to a chemical lab environment - must wear eye protection, safety footwear and additional PPE, as required.
Occasional exposure to manufacturing environment and environmentally controlled rooms. Gowning is required to work in these rooms.
Must follow company Safety Policy and Chemical Hygiene plan.
Adheres to GMP/QSR requirements and follows applicable QMS documentation (e.g., SOP’s, Work Instructions) to successfully accomplish job requirements.
Follows Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policies and procedures, including wearing hearing protection, safety shoes, gloves, eye protection as required.
Follows gowning procedures in designated areas.
May be required to be fit for a respirator and adhere to the Respiratory Practice Program, depending on specific chemical handling.
Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline with 0-2 years experience, OR MS in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline with 4-5 years experience, OR BS in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline with 6 years experience.
Must have worked in the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical industry for at least 1-2 years.
Must have knowledge of GLP and/or GMP as it applies to product and process design.
Must have experience with fluid dynamics, bioreactors, microfluidics, and emulsion.
Must have experience designing products and processes.
Must have experience scaling up manufacturing processes.
Experience designing and building micro-scale and macro-scale equipment.
Experience assembling various instrumentation into functional systems.
Experience with 3D and computational modeling software, such as CAD, CFD, or FEA.
Demonstrated problem solving ability using solid foundation in engineering.
Excellent writing skills.
