University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy Open Rank of Pharmacy – Open Track
The University of New Mexico, College of Pharmacy and the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center in Albuquerque, NM, are seeking a Director for the Poison Center with a faculty appointment in the College of Pharmacy. This is an Open rank/track opportunity. Responsibilities as Director of the poison center include all aspects of poison center operations and support for the functions of the public educator and the Medical Director. Responsibilities of the faculty appointment in the College of Pharmacy include providing educational opportunities to students in the College, academic productivity, and other activities appropriate to the position. Academic rank commensurate with credentials and experience.
The mission of the New Mexico Poison & Drug Information Center (NMPDIC) is to improve the health of New Mexicans by reducing illness and death associated with poisoning and by encouraging proper use of medications. The NMPDIC is accredited as a Regional Poison Center by the America’s Poison Centers. NMPDIC provides the residents and healthcare professionals of the State of New Mexico treatment recommendations 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. Twelve pharmacist Specialists in Poison Information, eleven of whom are certified, provide treatment recommendations during possible poisonings, collaborate with the Department of Health during state-wide and national emergencies, and assist emergency personnel during hazardous material incidents. All have successfully passed certification on the first examination and each recertification attempt. In addition to the Specialists, the NMPDIC employs a part time Medical Director, part time Associate Medical Director, Associate Director, and Health Educator. Health Education efforts are state-wide and include attendance at health fairs, group presentations to audiences of all ages, training and collaboration with pharmacy students, and many other collaborative efforts. In 2021 the poison center handled nearly 30,000 calls of which more than 20,000 were human exposures. Of those human exposure calls nearly 12,000 were safely managed at home. In healthcare costs, this could translate to a savings of approximately 14 million dollars if the patient chose to visit an emergency room instead of calling the poison center. The New Mexico Poison & Drug Information Center is a major teaching site for the UNM College of Pharmacy and the UNM School of Medicine through the Emergency Medicine Department. Medical Residents, Fellows, Interns and students can attend a four-week medical toxicology rotation with the Medical Director. In addition to toxicology courses and lectures, pharmacy students have the option of completing a Drug/Poison Information rotation in the fourth year. The NMPDIC is a public service program of the UNM Health Sciences Center and affiliated with the College of Pharmacy. The NMPDIC is funded as a Special Project through the New Mexico Legislature. Located in the historically-rich Southwest, the College of Pharmacy is part of the Health Sciences campus and works collaboratively with the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, UNM Hospitals, and UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center in the state's largest health complex.
The College of Pharmacy was established in 1945 and is the only college of pharmacy in New Mexico. It is the oldest health professional educational program in the state. The College holds the distinction of having the most ethnically diverse student body in the nation. The College has approximately 3,000 alumni from the professional program who practice in 48 states. Nearly 60% of all pharmacists practicing in New Mexico are alumni of the College.
