Main Purpose of the Position:   

This critical position will lead Genentechâs Security function, which also serves as a Center of Excellence for Roche and provides some services for the region. The Security function is responsible for keeping our SSF campus, regional network of places and workforce safe and secure as they travel to and from work and across the globe. The Security function also plays an essential role in protecting Genentechâs right to operate and serving as a steward for the GNE culture embracing prevention and problem solving to reduce risks and protect our people, environment and pipeline.

The Director of Security reports to the Vice President of Site Services is a member of the Site Services Leadership Team (SSLT), which includes leaders for other campus and regional services and operations.  Due to the sensitive nature of the position, the Director Security has a high degree of interface with Genentech Executive Committee, Roche Executive Committee, Roche Board of Directors and Genentech officers. 

The Director Security will define the long-term vision and strategy for the function, including how to evolve its business and organizational model to ensure it has the capabilities (i.e. people, technologies, service provider partnerships, and processes) to meet emerging business needs with simplicity, efficiency and innovative approaches.

The Director has responsibility for a total workforce of ~135, which includes ~40 employees and ~95 contractors provided through strategic service providers.  Direct reports include AD Workforce Protection, AD Crisis & Risk Management, AD Security Systems, Senior Manager Physical Protection, and Senior Manager Strategy and Business Operations.

This Director position will also need to have and build strong relationships with federal and local law enforcement agencies. This role will partner particularly closely with other Site Services functions responsible for protecting our right to operate and ensuring business continuity, particularly Site Operations and EHS.  Similarly, the role will need to proactively partner and build alignment with other corporate groups, including HR, Corporate Relations, Legal, and Government Affairs. 

This visible position requires exceptional judgment and executive presenceâ”knowing when to react and when not to react. To be successful, this leader will need to be able to navigate and influence within the GNE culture and balance Security best practices without adversely impacting the culture.  This leader must also possess technology and innovation savvy, business and financial acumen, change leadership and the ability to build networks internally and externally. The successful candidate will have demonstrated calm leadership in crisis and collaboration in planning.

The Director will also have significant budget responsibility and be responsible for long range forecasting, ROI/business cases, business plans, and dashboards with operational and financial metrics. 

The ideal candidate will be a passionate advocate for a secure and sustainable work environment and bring a breadth and depth of experience leading Security functions and programs in complex, highly regulated environments.  Their subject matter expertise, along with demonstrated leadership experience is essential to develop and realize with their team and partners a vision for what is possible and a fit for the Genentech culture.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

â--      Oversee the broad scope of the Security function, which includes accountability for leadership of: workforce and physical protection, crisis and risk management, and security systems for our 5M sq. foot SSF campus and Genentechâs network of places where our 12,000 employees plus contractors and visitors work.

â--      Provide regional Security services to other Genentech sites, including Washington DC, NYC, Portland Oregon, Dixon and San Diego.

â--      Protect Genentechâs right to operate with business continuity, fire life safety, product integrity, physical access, disaster response and preparedness, supply chain security, and other core Security practices.  Be an advocate and ambassador for Genentech.

â--      Provide leadership and oversight to Securityâs vision, multi-year strategies, and operating model.  Develop a high performing Security leadership team that effectively prioritizes and engages the Security workforce.  Drive necessary changes to ensure the function has the necessary capabilities and talent to predict and respond proactively to potential threats to the Genentech business.

â--      Contract and oversee delivery of strategic service providers for responsibilities such as security systems integration and physical protection.

â--      Primary GNE interface with San Mateo County and SSF Fire and Police Departments, as well as federal law enforcement agencies.

â--      Serve as an advisory SME and provide consultation as requested to Roche Security, Safety, Health and Environment.  Member of Roche global RoSect advisory committee as a Site Security Officer.

  • Business expertise:  Proficient developing business cases/ROIs and financial management.  Broad knowledge of business operations as it relates to business continuity. Brings the business acumen to facilitate investment decisions.
  • Culture fit: Enterprise mindset with ability to build networks, collaborate, and influence internally, particularly gEC, CEC, and other Genentech Vice Presidentsâ”and with peers and partners within SSLT, Corporate Relations, HR, IT, Legal, and Government Affairs. Comfortable leading from out in front, as well as behind the scenes.

Qualifications: Education, Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

(Minimum requirements)

  • Education:  BS/BA in Business, Engineering, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Government Affairs, International Relations, Management Information Systems, or related Security field.  MBA or MS in relevant field desirable.
  • 15+ yearsâ business experience in progressively more responsible roles in relevant Security areas, such as physical and workforce protection and/or business continuity. Ideally brings a generalist perspective from multiple experiences in various regulated environments.  Deeply understands FDA and other regulatory requirements applicable to cGMP and non-GMP environments. 
  • At least 10 years leading multi-disciplinary teams and directly managing people.  Experience leading employees, contractors and third party service providers are a must.
  • At least 5+ years successfully navigating the unique talent and infrastructure challenges of the San Francisco Bay area and has demonstrated a culture fit with doing business on the West coast, and particularly understands the pulse and pace of the Bay area.
  • Exceptional leader of peopleâ”able to inspire and motivate teams to make a big impact and deliver their best every day.  Track record of having the courage to drive value added change, while balancing risks and pacing for success.
  • Outstanding judgment and intuition for people and business risk: capable of quickly assessing and calmly navigating situations with natural instinct for when and how to act and influence within a complex, global corporate environment.
  • Experience managing a significant budget (at least $15M), meeting financial targets, improving business processes and driving cost savings. Demonstrated success consistently meeting performance metrics.
  • Demonstrates proficient understanding of legal compliance issues under key emergency/safety laws, such as OSHA, hazardous materials/waste handling and spill/release response, and USDOT regulations.  Shows humility and exceptional listening skills in tapping into other functional experts (i.e. EHS, legal) to guide their actions and decisions.
