Director, Translational Medicine Leader

Key member of the Medical Innovation team within the Clinical Science function. Responsible for developing and driving the medical strategy in areas of unmet medical need, and for initiating, managing and leading biomarker-based translational research and early development projects to demonstrate scientific and clinical proof of concept. Builds innovative medical value concepts and leads at least three key biomarker projects to be incorporated into Roche Tissue Diagnostics (RTD) existing platforms. Publishes results in middle and higher profile peer review journals. Supervises scientists, research assistants, and project coordinators/managers, and influences decisions and outcomes at a team, departmental and RTD leadership level. Exemplifies RTD values and beliefs through leadership by example.


  • Accountable for the development and management of a Disease Area Strategy Team (DAST) prioritized high medical value product concept portfolio within oncology that address unmet medical needs.
  • Initiates, plans, drives, and executes translational research projects.
  • Initiates and manages relationships with global academic thought leaders and other Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to ensure the right collaborative relationships are forged and maintained to most efficiently identify and validate promising high medical value diagnostic opportunities for potential development.
  • Works closely with executive leadership and Lifecycle teams across Roche Tissue Diagnostics to ensure alignment between strategic roadmaps and business requirements. Accountable for the strategic alignment of the specific assay concept portfolio with the Roche Diagnostics cross business area process for prioritizing disease state and indication focus areas as well as with RTD business strategy.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of emerging scientific and medical discoveries in the fields of cancer research and clinical oncology as appropriate through monitoring of the literature and attendance at key congresses. Manages KOL advisory board strategy to identify unmet medical needs and ideate and validate for product concept opportunities.
  • Initiates and manages appropriately designed pilot studies to prove or disprove the product concept hypotheses in collaboration with KOLs and external collaboration partners.
  • Manages Medical Innovation publication strategy in alignment with Lifecycle Teams as the foundation of the overall medical marketing effort. Develops product concept medical messages with associated proof sources such as abstracts, publications, and presentations at key congresses as part of the initial medical marketing effort in alignment with the Lifecycle teams.
  • Maintains alignment with all key internal stakeholder groups including Product Development, Tissue Research and Early Development (tRED), Advanced Staining Lifecycle, Companion Diagnostics Lifecycle, Digital Pathology Lifecycle, Business Development, Legal, Pathology Office, and Project Management.
  • Leads multi-disciplinary teams. Collaborates closely with other Roche business areas including Roche Diagnostics Division and Roche Pharma to align and capture synergies.
  • Supervises scientists and/or research assistant(s).
  • Performs miscellaneous duties and special projects as assigned.


Formal Training/Education:

  • MD with post graduate specialist training and/or qualifications in Anatomical Pathology, or PhD in cancer biology, genetics or immunology.


  • 6 years post MD or 6 years post PhD.
  • At least 2 years prior industry experience is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
