Oversees the Rare Reagent chemistry group in Tissue Research and Early Development (tRED) to support the development of immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization detection systems. The Manager will be responsible for the direction, planning and development of novel technologies in the areas of technology transfer to various development groups, securing of new chemicals and materials, analytical chemistry, troubleshooting of chemistry related problems in manufacturing, implementation of new technologies and adaptation of such to various research and development projects. The manager will direct efforts in synthesizing rare reagents and providing materials to internal and external tRED groups. Efforts will be directed to the generation and characterization and subsequent application of chemical/biochemical compounds for future research reagents to support the development of in vitro diagnostic tests.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
ï­ Initiates, directs and executes scientific efforts in the area of synthetic organic, oligonucleotide, and/or bioconjugate chemistry.
ï­ Directs bioconjugation chemistry and analytical chemistry efforts to support assay development based on new and existing methodologies, developing, establishing, and validating testing methodology used to control raw materials, production intermediates, and final products.
ï­ -Collaborates with Director of Chemistry to insure efficient discovery process of new technologies and transfer of such to various development groups.
ï­ -Insures timely patenting of RTD intellectual property and collaborates with Director of Chemistry in timely documentation of data.
ï­ Utilizes new or existing methods for identifying and determining the structure of novel compounds, including validation and documentation of all processes. Directs analysis and evaluation of material and products at all stages of development process.
ï­ Oversees testing of analytical samples for the laboratory area, the separation and characterization of candidate compounds, formulations development, peptide synthesis, protein modification, and nucleic acid synthesis.
ï­ Makes major contributions to all areas which need chemistry expertise, such as, surface chemistry, formulations and raw material specifications.
ï­ Monitors the competitive landscape and assists in bringing to new and useful technology for development.
ï­ Assists Director in staff training, maintenance and upkeep of Staff Training Documentation, Health and Safety issues, implementation of compliance at Roche and national level.
ï­ Assist in hiring process, preparation of departmental budgets; assists in monitors department spending.
ï­ Assists in directing departmental staff including: interviewing and hiring staff, providing performance feedback and reviews, counseling, developing, rewarding, completing progressive disciplinary and terminating.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Formal Training/Education:

Bachelors Degree in relevant discipline with 8 or more years of progressive work experience.

Masters Degree in relevant discipline with 6 or more years of progressive work experience.

Ph.D in relevant discipline with 4 or more years of progressive work experience.

Experience:

Bachelors- 8 or more years of experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument

product design/development, software development, instrument or reagent systems integration,

chemistry/reagent design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new

products.

Masters - 6 or more years of experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument

product design/development, software development, instrument or reagent systems integration,

chemistry/reagent design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new

products.

Ph.D- 4 or more years of experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument

product design/development, software development, instrument or reagent systems integration,

chemistry/reagent design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new

products.

Preferred Experience:
ï­ 10 years relevant scientific experience, including extensive experience in synthetic organic, biochemistry, bioconjugation and analytical chemistry.
ï­ 5 years of management experience of direct reports.
ï­ Demonstrated record of accomplishments (e.g., publications in scientific journals, issued US patents).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
ï­ Knowledge in developing new technologies to product development.
ï­ Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology.
ï­ Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team to achieve project goals and timelines is required.
ï­ Strong verbal, written communication skills. Ability to prepare and present information to groups.
ï­ Ability to lead and motivate others in both matrixed and direct-line management environments.
ï­ Uses professional concepts to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.
ï­ Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
