Directs the activities of an analytical support group in the development and manufacture of an organization's products, projects, and processes. Conducts and collaborates with others on the principles and theories in chemical and biological research, development and evaluation. Writes and reviews protocols for analytical methods and product support. Develops strategies to ensure effective achievement of scientific objectives. Monitors and evaluates completion of tasks and projects. May develop budgets for capital expenditures and labor. Typically collaborates with other top managers to establish company policies. Makes final decisions on administrative or operational matters. Selects, develops and evaluates employees to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

Oversees the Analytical Methods group in Tissue Research and Early Development (tRED) to support the development and manufacture of immunohistochemical, in situ hybridization, special stains and H&E reagents in a regulated industry for use in the HE 600 and Benchmark family of medical devices. The Senior Manager will be responsible for the direction, planning and development of analytical technologies in the areas of technology transfer to operations and development groups, troubleshooting of chemical- and biological-related problems in development and manufacturing, implementation of new technologies and adaptation of such.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Initiates, directs and executes scientific efforts in the areas of chemical and biological analytical methods.
- Collaborates with the Director of Chemistry to insure efficient delivery of analytical methods and results, on market support activities and development investigations.
- Utilizes new or existing methods for identifying and determining the structure of novel compounds, including validation and documentation of all processes. Directs analysis and evaluation of material and products at all stages of development and manufacturing process.
- Oversees testing of analytical samples for the laboratory area, the separation and characterization of chemical and biological development and manufacturing.
- Makes major contributions to all areas which need chemical and biological analytical expertise, such as, protein chemistry, formulations and raw material specifications.
- Assists Director as part of the leadership team in staff training, maintenance and upkeep of laboratories and capital equipment, health and safety issues, implementation of compliance at Roche and national level.
- Assist in hiring process, preparation of departmental budgets; assists in monitors department spending.
- Assists in directing departmental staff including: interviewing and hiring staff, providing performance feedback and reviews, counseling, developing, rewarding, completing progressive disciplinary and terminating.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Formal Training/Education:

Bachelors Degree with 12 or more years of progressive work experience. Experience preforming in a leadership capacity

Masters Degree with 10 or more years of progressive work experience. Experience performing in a leadership capacity

Pd.D with 8 or more years of progressive work experience. Experience performing in a leadership capacity

Experience:

12 years with BS: of experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument

product design/development, instrument or reagent systems integration, chemistry/reagent

design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new products.

10 years with MS: of experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument

product design/development, instrument or reagent systems integration, chemistry/reagent

design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new products.

8 years with PhD: combined academic and industry experience in the following functions or

combination thereof: instrument product design/development, instrument or reagent systems integration,

chemistry/reagent design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new products.

 

Preferred:
- 10 years relevant scientific experience, including extensive experience in biochemistry and analytical chemistry.
- 5 years of management experience of direct reports.
- Demonstrated record of accomplishments (e.g., product development and support).

- Technical project management experience preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge in developing new technologies to product development.
- Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories in chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team to achieve project goals and timelines is required.
- Strong verbal, written communication skills. Ability to prepare and present information to groups.
- Ability to lead and motivate others in both matrixed and direct-line management environments.
- Uses professional concepts to contribute to the development of company concepts and principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
