Systems Engineer Research IT - ELN

The Position

As a Systems Engineer in the Research IT group, your primary responsibilities include end user support and assistance with team initiatives. As a core responsibility you will work closely with members of the Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) group to support gRED users. As a business partner facing representative of the ELN team, and the wider Pharma Informatics (PI) group, timely issue resolution and customer satisfaction are of utmost importance. Participation in Research IT projects beyond ELN will be offered depending on your skills and workload.

Research's primary mission is to identify drug target candidates that eventually lead to novel therapies to treat patients with serious or life-threatening medical conditions. Research encourages an open, academic-like atmosphere and frequently publishes in top-tier, peer reviewed journals.


  • Key contributor  in ELN projects as assigned, including working with contractors on data analysis and integration projects

  • Provides business partner support via e-mail, phone and in-person

  • Support for installations and upgrades

  • Works closely with ELN staff to resolve technical issues quickly

  • Write and review business requirements

  • Works closely with vendors to resolve bugs and request enhancements

  • Suggests improvements to existing documentation, work processes and support

  • Supports larger projects led by senior Research IT team members as needed

  • Looks for opportunities to be innovative with support and customer care


  • BS degree in information systems or relevant scientific discipline

  • 2-3 years experience working in a laboratory setting or supporting scientists

  • Proficiency using and supporting applications on MS Windows and Mac OS X a must

  • Working knowledge of Linux, the UNIX command line, scripting and SQL preferred

  • IDBS ELN experience or other ELN experience strongly preferred  

  • Java application server installation and configuration a plus

  • Strong work ethic including accountability, respect and professionalism

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with your own team, technical IT partners and customers

  • A positive, open-minded attitude at work and an eagerness to learn new things
